TIU Snaps Purdue Calumet’s Four Game Winning Streak

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue University Calumet men’s basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end, as Trinity International University took home an 87-84 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Peregrines (7-9) lost for just third time in their last night games, dropping to 2-3 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Missed opportunities proved to be the story line for PUC, as the Black and Gold knocked down just 14-of-25 from the charity stripe in the three-point loss. Purdue Calumet’s defense, which had held opposing teams to 38.8 percent shooting in the past five games, fell victim to an efficient TIU attack, as the Trojans knocked down 10-of-23 from beyond the arc on their way to an impressive 56.7 field goal percentage.
The Black and Gold looked in control midway through the first half, as Brandon Bradford capped off a 9-3 run that handed PUC a 10-point lead, 32-22, with 5:42 left in the period. However, Trinity International closed the half on a 20-5 run to head into the break with a 42-37 advantage.
The Trojans carried that momentum over to the final stanza, pushing their lead to 10, 53-43, on Tyrone Smith’s trifecta just three minutes into the period. Purdue Calumet chipped away at the deficit for the next 15 minutes, before taking its only lead of the second half, 82-81, on Kameron Bright’s free throw.
However, that lead would be short lived, as Smith drained another trey to hand TIU a two-point advantage. The Peregrines kept it a one-possession game for the rest of the way out, but were unable to get off the potential game-tying shot before the buzzer.
Purdue Calumet finished with a 48.5 field goal percentage, but managed just 28.6 percent shooting from downtown. PUC dominated the glass once again, posting a 44-24 advantage on the boards which included 17 offensive rebounds.
Andrew Anderson led all players with 26 points to go along with his eight rebounds and four assists. Kameron Bright finished with 13 points and 8 boards off the bench, while Kameran Madison and Neal Hudson each added 12 points.

Boilermaker Track & Field Opens Strong At Purdue Invitational

Rookie Dani Bunch put up two huge marks on Saturday.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men’s and women’s track and field teams had a strong opening to the 2011 indoor campaign on Saturday, turning in several outstanding marks as they hosted the Purdue Invitational at Lambert Fieldhouse. The Boilermakers won a combined 24 events on the day, including a pair by standout freshman Dani Bunch, who stormed her way into the Purdue women’s record books.

Bunch posted all-time top-five Boilermaker marks in the shot put and weight throw on Saturday, tossing the No. 5 all-time mark in the shot put at 15.35 meters (50-04.50) and the No. 5 toss in school history in the weight throw at 19.20 meters (63-00.00).

Other solid outings on the women’s side came from senior Emily Breslin, junior Leah Eber and freshman Nikki Nunn. Breslin had a solid start to her indoor campaign, clearing 1.75 meters (5-08.75) to top the women’s high jump, while Eber leaped 11.85 meters (38-10.50) to win the triple jump in her first collegiate try in the event. Nunn kicked off her collegiate career with a win in the long jump, bouncing 5.71 meters (18-09.00) to top the field.

On the men’s side senior captain Jacob Palmer opened his final indoor campaign in strong fashion, posting a career-best time in the 600-meter run at 1:20.39. Classmate Chris Kirtz turned in a personal record in the 60-meter dash as well, topping the event in 6.96 seconds. Other impressive wins came from senior Bill Hardcastle and rookie Seth Virgil as Hardcastle topped the weight throw and fell just shy of his career best at 17.62 meters (57-09.75), while Virgil won the long jump in his first collegiate meet with a mark of 7.12 meters (23-04.50).

Lady Lancers Fall Short at Taylor
UPLAND, Ind. – A strong start wasn’t enough as the Lady Lancers fell 61-77 to Taylor University on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers (11-7; 2-3 MCC) jumped out to a 10-4 lead and controlled most of the first half. However, shooting went cold as Grace went nearly five minutes without a field goal.
Grace led by as many as six, but Taylor (12-8; 3-3 MCC) tallied 12 offensive rebounds in the half to take a 36-28 lead at the break.
Grace cut the deficit to three with 15:31 remaining, but Taylor began to pull away behind excellent shooting from the free throw line going 19-20 in the half and 26-27 in the game.
The Lady Lancers had three players in double figures. Kiera Gray led the team with 16 points and three assists while Hayley Cashier added 14 points and six rebounds. Danielle Boykin also chipped in 10 points for Grace.
“We rebounded better in the second half, but they played with more urgency than we did today,” said head coach Scott Blum. “We will learn from this and bounce back.”

Grace Defense Hounds Trojans
WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Lancer defense held the Trojans to a season low 42 points on 21 percent shooting from the field on Saturday.
Grace (12-6; 3-2 MCC) turned up the defensive intensity sparking an 11-0 run with 12 minutes remaining in the first half to give the Lancers a 21-14 lead over the Trojans (11-8; 1-5 MCC). The run was sparked by Grace’s ability to create turnovers.
The Lancers were led by Bruce Grimm Jr. who recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. He also added five steals. “Grimm does a good job of creating havoc on the defensive end, which leads to easy buckets on the other end,” said assistant coach John Yeh.
“We made an effort to get the ball into Duke Johnson and he really opened it up for the rest of the team,” continued Yeh. Johnson scored 11 of his 19 points in the first half including seven of the first eight points.
“We played a complete game today,” said head coach Jim Kessler. “Our defense played well the entire night and forced Taylor into some bad decisions, which allowed our offense to get back on track.”
Grace took control of the game for good mid-way through the second half by going on a 15-2 run. Grimm ignited the run with seven points and two assists to give the Lancer’s a commanding 47-28 lead.
Grace outrebounded the Trojans 38-24 dominated the paint 38-8 en route to a 70-42 victory. The win is the sixth straight win over the Trojans and the ninth straight home win this season.
Grace shot 52 percent from the field on the day with only two players in double-figures. Greg Miller played well of the bench as he netted nine points and ripped down eight rebounds.

Second Half Surge Lifts Peregrines Past TIU

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue University Calumet women’s basketball team blitzed Trinity International University in the second half, 55-24, on its way to an 88-61 blowout on Saturday afternoon. The Peregrines improve to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference with the win.
After heading into halftime with a four-point deficit, 37-33, Purdue Calumet came to life in the second half. The Black and Gold held the Trojans to just 23.1 percent shooting in the final stanza, while connecting on a sizzling 61.3 percent of their shots from the field including 6-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc.
The Peregrines opened the closing period on a 5-0 run to grab their first lead since the 16:29 mark in the first half, 38-37. TIU responded with back-to-back buckets from Reanna Perera to regain the lead, but PUC was able to answer at the charity stripe. Purdue Calumet scored five-straight points from the line, before Tierra Turner’s jumper in the lane pushed the Black and Gold’s lead to six, 51-45, with 15:13 remaining.
PUC could not pull away from Trinity International, however, as the two teams traded baskets over the next seven minutes until the Peregrine defense stepped up. Purdue Calumet held the Trojans to just three points in the final 8:31, while Alex Starr led the charge with 11 of the team’s 25 points in that span.
Purdue Calumet finished with a 48.5 field goal percentage, while holding TIU to 32.1 percent on 1-of-22 shooting from downtown. The Peregrines posted an eight rebound edge on the boards, behind a 33-16 effort in the second half.
Starr topped the Black and Gold with 24 points, 19 of which came in the final period. Turner notched her 10th double-double of the year, tallying 20 points, 16 rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Stephaine Beck and Brooklyn Short joined them in double-figures with 14 and 12 respectively. Lindsey Whitcomb gave some impressive minutes off the bench, grabbing seven rebounds to go along with four points and one block.

No. 18 Boilermakers Suffer 21-19 Loss To No. 17 Central Michigan

Junior Matt Fields had a huge pin at 133 pounds.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The 18th-ranked Purdue wrestling team dropped its second dual of the day at the 23rd-Annual NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, suffering a 21-19 loss at the hands of 17th-ranked Central Michigan University (CMU) at the UNI Dome on Saturday. A pair of Boilermakers scored pins in the loss, while two others earned wins to keep the score close.

The Boilermakers lost the opener for the second straight match as freshman Camden Eppert lost a 2-0 decision to CMU’s Christian Cullinan, but Purdue junior Matt Fields shocked the wrestling world with a surprising pin of ninth-ranked Scotti Sentes. Sentes looked like he was on his way to bonus points, taking Fields down and turning him twice for an 8-0 lead after three minutes. Fields made the unorthodox choice to take top position in the second frame and took full advantage, catching Sentes in a cradle and sticking him at the 3:47 mark to give Purdue a 6-3 team score lead.

Fellow junior Jake Fleckenstein pushed the advantage to 9-3, earning his first win of the year at 141 pounds as he downed Scott Mattingly, 3-2. Fleckenstein went to the third period trailing 1-0, but after selecting the bottom position he escaped and hit a nice high-crotch takedown to build the decisive advantage.

The Boilermakers took a serious hit over the next four matches as the Chippewas went on a 15-0 run to take an 18-9 advantage. It started as 149-pound Purdue senior Sam Patacsil had to default against Donnie Corby after injuring his right arm, and followed as Eric Cubberly upset fellow Boilermaker senior Colton Salazar, 9-5. At 165 pounds, CMU’s Ryan Cubberly snared a takedown with just 13 seconds left in the match to edge Purdue freshman Patrick Kissel, and the 174-pound contest went all the way to a tie-breaker before fifth-ranked Chippewa Ben Bennett edged out 10th-ranked Purdue senior Luke Manuel, 4-1.

No. 12 junior A.J. Kissel got the Boilermakers off the slide at 184 pounds as he needed just 1:44 to stick CMU’s Chad Friend and knife the score to 18-15. Ninth-ranked senior Logan Brown followed Kissel’s lead and overwhelmed Craig Kelliher in a 9-1 major decision to regain the Boilermakers’ lead, 19-18. Kelliher wrestled simply not to get pinned as after giving up a takedown in the first 15 seconds he flattened out and took four stalling calls, just one away from disqualification.

The Purdue lead was shortlived as third-ranked heavyweight Jarod Trice posted an 8-2 decision over Boilermaker junior Roger Vukobratovich to seal the CMU victory. Purdue falls to 3-3-1 with the loss and resumes competition on Friday with a Big Ten Dual at Michigan.
