Hornback’s Career Night Can’t Save Ancilla at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI – Michael Hornback scored a season-high 21 points but his Ancilla College men’s basketball team lost 91-69 at Kalamazoo Valley Community College on Saturday.

Hornback, a freshman guard, added five assists and three steals in 36 minutes of work for Ancilla (2-9, 1-2 MCCAA Western).

Antonio Cannon added 12 points and seven assists while Ellis Cole chipped in with 11 points for the Chargers.

Kalamazoo Valley (13-4, 5-0 MCCAA Western) put on an offensive clinic, connecting on over 57 percent of their shots on the night on 32-of-56 shooting. They commanded the post throughout the game, holding a 37-29 advantage in rebounds and collecting six blocks during the game.

“They hurt us inside and outside,” said Ancilla men’s basketball coach Greg Neeley. “We struggled to get key stops when we needed them.

“Every time we got close, Kalamazoo Valley made a big play. We played well in short stretches, but for us to beat good teams away from home, we have to become more consistent.”

Lady Chargers Come Up Short at NJCAA #12 Kalamazoo Valley

KALAMAZOO, MI – The Ancilla College women’s basketball team dropped a tough 78-64 decision at NJCAA #12 Kalamazoo Valley Community College on Saturday in MCCAA Western Conference action.

Katrina Vannoy led the Lady Chargers (3-10, 1-4 MCCAA Western) with 13 points on the night while fellow freshman guard Meghan Brown chipped in with 12.

Rebecca Bunkowfst and Naomi McNeal also reached double figures in scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

“We took a big step forward today with only 18 turnovers in a 40-minute game,” said Ancilla women’s basketball coach Dave Liverance. “That was outstanding against this team.”

Kalamazoo Valley (10-5, 5-1 MCCAA Western) held the advantage on the boards, grabbing 47 rebounds to Ancilla’s 26. They also held a large advantage at the free throw line, sinking 19 of 24 attempts at the charity stripe compared to Ancilla’s 7-of-12 performance.

Despite those stats, Liverance was pleased with the strides his team is making at this point in the season.

“We executed our game plan well,” said Liverance. “I’m very proud of the effort. Our team is getting better. When we get everything rolling on a given night, we are going to be hard to beat.”
