Mendes and Schiffer Named Men's Soccer Academic All-MAC
KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan placed two of 11 selections on the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team as sophomore midfielder Kai Mendes (Grand Rapids, Mich./Rockford) and junior forward Pat Schiffer (St. John's, Mich./Ovid-Elsie) were recognized for their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.
Both team captains, the pair led Western Michigan to one of the most successful seasons in school history, as WMU reached the conference tournament championship for just the third time ever and also took runners-up in the regular season, only behind national champion Akron. The Broncos posted an overall record of 10-8-2, going 4-2-0 in MAC play.
Mendes was a Second Team All-MAC selection, leading WMU in assists with seven and ranking second in goals (5), points (17) and shots (42). He finished the regular season ranked third in the conference in assists, fifth in points and sixth in assists. He was also 45th in the nation and 11th in the Great Lakes Region in assists. Mendes maintained the highest GPA on the team with a 3.71 in finance.
A double major in aviation science and aviation administration, Schiffer was a MAC All-Tournament Team selection. He recorded his first career points this season, scoring two goals and registering one assist. Schiffer scored the game-winner in the final game of the season at Buffalo to secure the Broncos a second-place MAC finish and No. 2 tournament seed, which were the best in program history. During the season, Schiffer averaged six hours per week in the skies, piloting Cirrus SR-20 aircrafts. He carried a 3.49 GPA.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
