MCC Names Hopkins MCC Men's Basketball Player of the Week

MARION, Ind. -- Patrick Hopkins was named Mid-Central College Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week as he nearly earned a double-double average in helping Indiana Wesleyan University to a 3-0 week.
The sophomore forward from Kokomo, Indiana finished with 17.3 points and 9.7 rebounds on 59.4-percent shooting. The honor is the second this season for Hopkins.
Indiana Wesleyan extended its win streak to 11 straight which ranks second all-time in program history, just three shy of the record set a season ago. IWU is now 14-3.
Hopkins recorded double-doubles in wins over University of Rio Grande (Ohio) and NAIA Division I No. 6-ranked Westminster (Utah) College at the 2010 Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix, Arizona. He had 18 points, 11 boards and four steals versus Rio Grande and finished the tournament with a bang as he scored 21 and grabbed 13 rebounds against highly ranked Westminster. Hopkins completed the week on New Year's Day with 13 points and five rebounds against Trinity Christian (Ill.) College.
Overall this season, Hopkins is averaging 16.7 points and 8.9 rebounds for the No. 12-ranked Wildcats.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to the mix at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 6 with a home game versus No. 24-ranked Huntington (Ind.) University in MCC action.

Late Rally Falls Short; Saint Xavier Falls to St. Thomas, 72-69
Miami Gardens, Fla. - Despite five different players scoring in double figures, the Saint Xavier University men’s basketball team could not complete a late second-half rally and fell 72-69 to Saint Thomas University (Fla.) Monday evening in Miami Gardens, Fla. Sophomore guard Scott Taloff (Bedford Park, Ill./St. Laurence) led the Cougars with 17 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the floor. Taloff hit a three-pointer with 21 seconds remaining in regulation to make it a one-point game, 68-67, but STU hit four of its final six free throws in the closing seconds to hold on for the victory. The Cougars fall to 12-4 overall this season with the loss, while Saint Thomas improves to 6-5 on the year.
Senior guard Stan Mayfield (Snellville, Ga./McKendree University/Snellville) had a solid all-around game with 16 points, five assists and four steals. Senior guard Marco Samimy (Peterson Woods, Ill./CICS-Northtown Academy) and junior point guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) each chipped in 12 points for Saint Xavier, while freshman guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) scored 11 points. The Cougars had difficulty rebounding in Monday’s loss with Saint Thomas owning a 42-20 advantage in the battle of the boards. SXU got off to a hot start leading by as many as 10 points (15-5) just six minutes into play before STU stormed back and tied the game midway through the first half. Saint Thomas would sustain the momentum for the remainder of the first frame leading by as many as 17 points before taking an 11-point lead, 43-32, into the break. The Cougars trailed by as many as 20 points in second-half action, but used a late scoring surge in the final four minutes to make things interesting in the closing seconds.
Saint Xavier (12-4 overall/0-1 CCAC) wraps up its Florida trip on Tuesday, January 4, with a game against Northwood University (Fla.). The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (central) start

McKinney Named WHAC Player of the Week
Fort Wayne, IN – Clyde McKinney has earned this week’s Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors.
The 5’11” senior guard led the 15th ranked Warriors to a 76-74 come from behind victory over No.25 Indiana University-East. McKinney scored a season-high 22 points while dishing out seven assists, collecting five rebounds, and coming away with three steals, including a key steal with 19 seconds left to help seal the victory for Tech.
McKinney is averaging 13.9 points per game and is shooting over 48 percent from 3-point range this season. He also ranks 18th in NAIA Division II in steals (33) and 27th in assists (62).
The Warriors currently stand at 11-4 overall this season and 3-1 in conference play. Tech will host the 3rd ranked Golden Eagles of Cornerstone University on Wednesday, January 5 in a battle for the top spot in the conference.

Benike Earns Third Consecutive Weekly Honor

Kallie Benike recorded a double-double in Davenport University's 89-80
victory against top-ranked Northwestern College (Iowa) to help her
earn her third Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Women's
Basketball Player of the Week award.

The senior from Campbellsport, Wis., scored 22 points, grabbed 10
rebounds, had two assists and two steals during the showdown between
the top two teams in NAIA Division II. Davenport won 89-80. A 5-8
guard, Benike followed that performance with a 20-point effort in a
105-58 win against Indiana University Northwest. For the week, she
averaged 21 points, six rebounds and 3.5 steals while shooting 63%
from the field and a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line.

The Panthers remain undefeated at 17-0 and will host Madonna
University on Jan. 8 in the first WHAC contest of the new year

No. 5 Saint Xavier Opens New Year with Win over Georgetown
CHICAGO – Senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) and junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph’s College/Monroe) helped No. 5 ranked Saint Xavier University open the New Year with a bang claiming an 88-76 victory over Georgetown College (Ky.) in NAIA women’s basketball action Monday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Shalonda Young led all scorers with 25 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Marissa Young logged a double-double of 23 points and 11 boards. The Cougars (10-5 overall) led 45-38 at the half and then shot a blistering 57 percent (13-for-23) after the break to pull away for the double-digit win.

Senior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) also had a nice outing for SXU Monday with 15 points, six rebounds and three assists. The Cougars put pressure on the Tigers throughout the game recording 14 steals, including six by Marissa Young. The steals help to generate 20 turnovers by Georgetown and Saint Xavier took full advantage of the miscues by scoring 20 points off fast break buckets and 26 points off turnovers. The Tigers were led by junior guard Jessica Waddle with 19 points, including five three-pointers. The Cougars opened the game with a 10-2 run and led for a majority of the contest with Georgetown taking a brief four-point lead midway through the first half
