Maple Leafs Can’t Snap #5 IWU’s 18-Game Winning Streak
MARION, Ind. – The Goshen College men’s basketball team could not keep pace with the #5 team in the nation, losing 48-72 on the road Tuesday night.
It was poor shooting throughout that plagued the Maple Leafs as they hit just 27% overall and 1-of-17 from 3-point territory. They also had only four assists, while the hosts hit 47% of their attempts and registered 16 assists.
The result was drastically different than a two-point loss to the Wildcats back in late November in Goshen. Indiana Wesleyan is a much different team at this point, though, having rolled off 18 straight victories, including a perfect 10-0 mark in the Mid-Central College Conference.
The Maple Leafs (8-15, 1-9 MCC) have a full week off with the weekend bye. They are back in action next Tuesday at Bethel College in Mishawaka
Illinois Volleyball, Softball Standout Signs With Goshen
GOSHEN, Ind. – Goshen College volleyball coach Jim Routhier and softball coach Lee Mast have teamed up before. They are back at it, pairing up to bring in Illinois dual-sport athlete Danielle Kerschhackl who recently signed a national letter of intent to play both sports for the Maple Leafs beginning in 2011-12.
Despite standing just 5-foot tall, Kerschhackl has been a standout in both sports at Elmwood Park High School in Chicago’s west suburbs.
On the softball field, Kerschhackl’s versatility led her to the varsity as a freshman when her team won conference, regional, and sectional titles. She has received multiple team awards, including Gold Glove, Most Versatile, and Rookie of the Year. As a junior in 2010, the future Maple Leaf batted .350 with an astounding .514 on base percentage.
Kerschhackl has also played travel team softball where her team finished ninth (out of 97 teams) in the NSA “A” World Series in Columbus, Ohio.
“When I first met Danielle, the first thing that got my attention was the communication that she had on the field with her teammates,” Mast explained. “She can play anywhere on the field, but pitch and catch. She may be short in stature, but she carries a big stick and also has tremendous speed.”
The athletic ability and quickness of Kerschhackl is also an asset on the volleyball court. As a libero and defensive specialist, Kerschhackl racked up 400 digs and 22 service aces on way to All Metro Suburban Conference honors as a senior.
“Danielle is a very good defensive player,” Routhier said. “She has amazing quickness and court awareness. She will be a great addition to our defensive program. We are very excited to have Danielle join us next year.”
Equally impressive off the court/ field, Kerschhackl is part of the National Honor Society, will graduate near the top of her class and has been given the Metro Suburban All Conference Academic Award on several occasions. The daughter of Michael and Denise Kerschhackl, Danielle intends on majoring in Communications after starting at Goshen in the fall
Rushville H.S. senior commits to USF basketball
RUSHVILLE, Ind. – Rushville High School senior Spencer Comer has selected the University of Saint Francis to continue his education and pursuit of basketball excellence starting in the fall of 2011-12.
Comer is a 6-foot-3 guard who is averaging 16 points, five rebounds and two assists for Lions, who are 11-2 and 5-1 in Hoosier Heritage Conference. He is ranked No. 7 as a shooting guard by Indiana Basketball Digest. He scored a career-high 27 points in a 71-67 defeat against Muncie Southside on Jan. 19, 2011.
“After he was here to watch the Bethel game, he told me he had made up his mind and that this was the place for him,” USF Head Coach Chad LaCross said. “Spencer is going to strengthen our perimeter defense. He will likely be able to guard three positions with his great lateral quickness, strength, and toughness. We’re lookin’ for guys who want to defend and Spencer really fits that mold.”
Comer also played quarterback on the RHS football team and was named to the All-HHC team. He was also AP Class 3A All-State Honorable Mention as a punter.
Comer averaged 17 points, six rebounds and three assists and had a single-game high 25 points as a junior at RHS in 2009-10.
Comer is the second high school senior to commit to USF. Greg Dickey, a guard at Tipton High School who has played on AAU teams with Comer, committed to USF in November 2010.
Shively named MCC Player of the Week
HUNTINGTON, IN—Huntington University senior guard, Tyler Shively, was named the Mid-Central Conference Player of the Week for the week of January 24-30, 2011.
Shively, an accounting major from Columbia City, Ind. (Columbia City High School), was the No. 22nd-ranked Foresters’ leading scorer in a pair of games this past week. Shively began the week with 25 points by shooting 66.7% (8-for-12) from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free line against the #11-ranked Cougars of Saint Francis. He followed that up with a 24-point performance that included the game-winning shot in the Foresters’ 73-71 overtime win at Marian on Saturday. He also grabbed three rebounds and dished out four assists against the Knights.
Shively currently leads the NAIA Division II in free throw shooting percentage at 93.5% (129-for-138). He also sits atop the MCC in 3-point field goal percentage (42.5%) and ranks third in conference scoring with his 19.4 points per game.

Toledo Names Two Players to Serve as Captains in 2011
TOLEDO, OH - Seniors Matt Zahel and Jason Edwards will serve as captains for the Rockets' baseball program during the upcoming 2011 season, eighth-year skipper Cory Mee announced today.
"I thought our team did a great job of choosing captains," Mee said. "We want somebody to represent what our team is all about, and I don't think they could have chosen two better people than Matt and Jason. Both these young men are excellent students and both have excelled on the diamond. More important than that, though, they are the ultimate team players. They will do whatever it takes to help our team win."
Zahel appeared in 17 games on the mound this past spring, making two starts. The right-handed hurler sported a 0-2 record with a 3.68 ERA and a team-high three saves. The Castalia, OH native accumulated 29.1 innings of work, surrendering 21 runs (12 earned) on 34 hits with 26 strikeouts. For his career, Zahel ranks second in UT annals in saves (9, 2009) and tied for seventh (4, 2008) in the single-season record book.
Edwards started 23 of 31 games in the outfield in 2010, batting .284 with 18 runs scored, two doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI. The three-year letterwinner hit safely in 16 contests, including five multi-hit and four multi-RBI efforts.
The Midnight Blue & Gold will get the ball rolling in three weeks on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 18-20 when it travels to the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, NC to battle Canisius (Feb. 18 & 20) and Creighton (Feb. 19).
Sivak Earns Valpo’s First Horizon League Swimming Honor
Valparaiso University senior David Sivak (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) has been named the Horizon League’s Swimmer of the Week following two school records and five event victories last week for the Crusaders.
In the process, Sivak is the first Crusader to earn a swimming honor from the Horizon League since Valparaiso joined the conference prior to the 2007-2008 season.
A senior, Sivak set school records in the 100 backstroke (51.98) and 400 individual medley (4:09.21) on Sunday at the Butler Invitational, his third meet in as many days. He now owns school records in six individual events and is also a part of all five school record relays at Valpo.
Sivak, who ranks among the top-10 all-time at Valpo in 12 different individual events, also won the 50 freestyle twice on the weekend while also posting event wins in the 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, and the 100 back
Barone Named CCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Joliet, Ill. – Marking the seventh time this season that a Saint Xavier University women’s basketball player has claimed the honor, senior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Basketball Division I Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon by the conference office. Barone helped the Cougars to a pair of big non-conference victories over No. 24 ranked Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) and Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.). Senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) and junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph’s College/Monroe) have each received three of the previous 11 CCAC Player of the Week honors awarded this season for SXU.
In Saint Xavier’s 84-62 home win over No. 24 Cardinal Stritch, Barone had one of the best games of her four-year collegiate career netting a career-best 32 points to go along with six rebounds, five assists and career-high tying seven steals. Her 32-point scoring outburst gave her just enough to reach the 1,000-point career milestone as well. She followed that impressive outing with 19 points and eight assists in last Saturday’s 85-75 road win over Purdue University-Calumet. On the week, Barone averaged 25.5 points, 6.5 assists, 4.0 steals and 3.5 rebounds per game for the Cougars. She shot a stellar 62 percent (18-for-29) from the floor and 86 percent (12-for-14) from the foul line.
Saint Xavier (13-5 overall/1-0 CCAC) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., this evening for a big NAIA and CCAC showdown against No. 21 ranked Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start
Jackson’s Pressure Too Much for Chargers
JACKSON, MI – The Ancilla College men’s basketball team continued to struggle against the pressure defense, committing 21 turnovers in a 95-68 loss at Jackson Community College on Monday in MCCAA Western Conference action.
Ancilla (2-12, 1-5 MCCAA Western) struggled from the outset once again, connecting on just 8-of-26 shots in the first half as Jackson (13-6, 5-1 MCCAA Western) built a 54-32 halftime lead.
“Jackson is one of the better teams in the league, and they did a good job of pressuring us into turnovers and hurried shots,” said Ancilla men’s basketball coach Greg Neeley. “They didn’t allow us to get into any kind of rhythm offensively.
“We let their pressure dictate how the game was going to be played.”
Antonio Cannon led Ancilla with 21 points on 6-of-17 shooting from the floor. Josh Wilson and Joby Renbarger each added 11 points in the losing effort.

Indiana Wesleyan alum Brandon Beachy is ranked as the No. 8 prospect for the Atlanta Braves.
MARION, Ind. -- Brandon Beachy's stellar 2010 season has everyone taking notice of the Indiana Wesleyan University alum.
With no fanfare entering last season, Beachy's stock has soared and he is now the eighth ranked prospect in the Atlanta Braves organization, according to the latest issue of Baseball America.
The Kokomo, Indiana native led the entire minor leagues last year with a 1.73 earned run average. He finished his breakout campaign with three starts for Atlanta in the pennant chase during the regular season and a spot on the Braves' 25-man postseason roster.
In three starts for Atlanta, Beachy accumulated a 3.00 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 15 innings pitched. Atlanta went on to win the Wild Card by one game over San Diego to advance to the playoffs.
Baseball America says, "Beachy's repertoire and feel for pitching bode well for the long term. He succeeded as both a reliever and a starter in 2010, enhancing his chances of making the major league staff this spring."
Atlanta pitchers and catchers will report to Spring Training on February 14.

Falcons just miss sweeping Mountaineers in first win of dual-match season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BGSU Athletic Communications) -- The Bowling Green State University tennis team picked up a win over Big East Conference competition on Saturday (Jan. 22), downing West Virginia University by a 6-1 count. The neutral-site match was held in Louisville, Ky.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean are now 1-1 in dual-match play this season, splitting this weekend's two matches. The Brown and Orange had suffered a loss to host U of L on Friday before bouncing back with Saturday's win over the Mountaineers.
BGSU swept all three doubles matches, and very nearly captured every singles contest as well. WVU's lone victory came by a narrow 16-14 verdict in a third-set tiebreaker.
In doubles play, BGSU won at the top-two flights by identical 8-3 scores, and the Falcons picked up an 8-5 victory at the third flight.
BGSU's top-flight tandem was senior Christine Chiricosta and sophomore Maddy Eccleston, while the Falcon team at the number-two flight consisted of freshmen Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland. Sophomores Mary Hill and Katie Grubb teamed up for the victory at the third flight.
In singles play, the bottom half of the BGSU lineup was nothing short of dominant. The three players at flights four through six lost a combined total of one game in their six sets.
Reuland did not lose a single game, downing Liv Pettersson by identical 6-0 scores at the fourth flight. Eccleston matched Reuland's performance at flight number five, blanking Catie Wickline by a 6-0, 6-0 result.
At the sixth flight, junior Jessica Easdale lost a single game in her first set against Anna Rodionova, then won the second set by a 6-0 result.
Nikki Chiricosta won in relatively easy fashion at the third flight, dropping a total of only three games in her victory over Mary Chupa. And, Hill dropped just five total games in her win over Veronica Cardenas at the second flight.
The Mountaineers' lone win came at the top singles flight. Melis Tanik and Christine Chiricosta split their first two sets, then battled through an epic third set. With the overall dual-match result -- a BGSU win -- already determined, Tanik and Chiricosta began a third-set tiebreaker, scheduled to go to 10 points. The two players battled back and forth, however, with Tanik finally pulling out the win by a 16-14 final.
The Falcons will return to action next weekend, hosting Cleveland State University on Friday (Jan. 28). That dual is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.

ROOSEVELT NO CONTEST FOR GRACE
CHICAGO, Ill. – Three Grace big men scored in double-figures in Grace’s 81-56 thrashing against non-conference opponent Roosevelt University on Saturday.
Duke Johnson led with 12 points in 20 minutes, Greg Miller posted 11 points in 15 minutes, and Jared Treadway added 10 points in eight minutes to give the Lancers their fifth victory in six games.
“We had a balanced production today,” said head coach Jim Kessler. “We were able to dominate down low and were productive on the offensive end, shooting above 50 percent from the field.”
The Lancers (15-7) held a narrow 22-18 advantage with six minutes left in the first half, then spearheaded a game changing 16-2 run to close the period and put the game out of reach. Johnson scored six points in a row during the run, and Dayton Merrell drained a half-court running shot at the buzzer to give Grace a demanding 38-20 lead at the break.
Grace continued their dominance over the Lakers (4-16) in the second half and rarely let its lead fall below 20 points. The Lancers built their lead to 32 points (69-37), the largest of the game, at the 7:10 mark.
The Lancers pounded it into the paint all night and outscored Roosevelt 56-18 down low, including 28-6 in the first period. Grace’s quality looks led to 54 percent shooting overall and 57 percent in the second half. They only took 12 threes total, and no Lancer attempted more than three from beyond the arc.
Tannan Peters, Dennis Williams and Miller grabbed seven boards apiece. Peters had four offensive rebounds.
Fourteen Lancers saw five minutes of action or more on the evening.
“It was a total team effort,” Kessler continued. “It will be important to carry this over when we get back into MCC play next week."
The game was Grace’s last non-conference contest of the season.
The Lancers return to action on the road against rival Bethel College at 8 p.m. on Tuesday to kick-off the second half of their conference season and try to improve on their 5-3 MCC record

Coach T Resigns Post As Head Women’s Soccer Coach
Coach T Resigns Post As Head Women’s Soccer Coach
GOSHEN, Ind. – After nine seasons at the helm of the Goshen College women’s soccer program, Thavisith ‘Coach T’ Mounsithiraj announced his resignation on Wednesday.
“Upon further reflection, I became keenly aware at the enormity of the task of managing a soccer program at the college level, while holding down a full-time job off campus and having a growing family,” Mounsithiraj said.
“I can proudly look back on the past nine years and appreciated the honor and privilege of serving with quality colleagues, administrators and student-athletes,” he added.
After a standout career as a Maple Leaf, Mounsithiraj returned to his alma mater in 2002 to take over the women’s program after a successful stint at Northridge High School where he still serves as a guidance counselor.
“We are very thankful for the time and energy Coach T has given the women’s soccer program over the past nine years,” Goshen College Athletic Director Tim Demant said. “His passion for the game and his desire to see his players grow as soccer players and people is second to none.”
At Goshen, Mounsithiraj has coached 26 Daktronics-NAIA All American Scholar-Athletes and his teams have earned the Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America all nine seasons. On the pitch, the Maple Leafs have compiled a record of 42-101-10 under his leadership, including a 5-12 mark in 2010.
“It is my hope to use my free time now to become more active in ministry with my family and sharing my passion and love of coaching at a different level,” Mounsithiraj added. “The people that I have been associated with both as a student-athlete and as a coach have contributed profoundly to my growth as a family man and as a professional.”
Mounsithiraj will continue to manage spring training sessions as well as finalize the recruiting process until a new coach has been found.
“We wish Coach T well in his future pursuits,” Demant said before concluding that a national search for Goshen College’s next head women’s soccer coach would begin immediately

Broncos Earn First MAC Win at Northern Illinois, 71-67
DEKALB, Ill.- Western Michigan picked up its first Mid-American Conference victory of the year, defeating Northern Illinois on the road Saturday, 71-67. WMU had lost the past four meetings in DeKalb, its last win at the Convocation Center coming on Feb. 26, 2006, before any of the current Broncos were members of the team.
After a sluggish start, Western Michigan started clicking midway through the first half. The Broncos missed their first seven shots, allowing Northern Illinois to open a 13-2 lead. At the 13:58 mark, WMU head coach Tasha McDowell called a timeout to regroup her side and WMU proceeded to go on a 29-13 run to close out the half to lead 31-26 at the break. Miame Giden gave WMU a boost in the last two minutes of the period, scoring WMU’s final six points in a 38-second span.
Up two, 41-39, at 14:10 in the second half, Giden sparked another Bronco run. WMU outscored NIU 9-1 over the next three minutes, Giden with five of the points. Taylor Manley’s take to the basket with 11:22 remaining gave WMU its first double digit lead, 50-40.
Western Michigan led by eight with just over a minute on the clock and held off a late push by the Huskies’ Courtney Shelton. Shelton hit three 3-pointers over the next 36 seconds to bring NIU to within two, 69-67, with twenty seconds remaining. Kemmy Dominique knocked down a pair of free throw to preserve the win for WMU with seven ticks left.
Several Broncos stepped up their play and the Brown & Gold put forth its most balanced attack of the season. The productivity could be seen in the stats, as WMU shot its second highest percentage of the year at 42.6. Manley and Dominique led Western Michigan with 18 points apiece, while Giden pumped in 17 points. Brenna Banktson just missed out on a double-double with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Shelton led three Huskies in double figures with a game-high 29 points. Marke Freeman tallied 11 points and Kim Davis had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Stapke Leads Titans To 10th Consecutive Victory
Lizzie Stapke (Highland, IN/Highland) scored a game-high 17 points and Emily Strilich (Valparaiso, IN/Boone Grove) chipped in a career-best ten as IU South Bend (13-3/1-0 CCAC) stretched their win streak to ten games as they broke open a 41-all tie and streaked to a 57-43 win over Robert Morris. The Titans held the Eagles to just 28.6% shooting for the game, including a 3-for-15 mark from behind the three-point line.
RMU jumped out early, converting a trio of Titan turnovers into five points, forcing a timeout just two minutes into the game. IU South Bend responded out of that break, however, scoring 16 of the next 20 points in the game to take a 16-9 edge with 13 minutes to play in the opening half.
It was a game of runs, though, and the Eagles responded with one of their own, taking a 17-16 lead with five minutes to play in the period. From there, the teams traded scored and headed to the locker rooms with the game tied at 23.
Out of the break, neither team was able to assert control early in the second half. After the teams traded turnovers, scores and missed shots, the Titans were able to stretch out a 37-31 edge. Once again, however, RMU was able to close the game, tying the game at 37, and eventually again at 41.
From there, it was all Titans. A 9-0 run, fueled by a Katie Hacker (Indianapolis, IN/Franklin Central) triple that barely beat the shot clock stretched the Titan lead to 50-41, and after RMU scored to make it 50-43, they would not crack the scoring column again, as IU South Bend put in the final seven points of the contest from the free throw line to ice the game away.
For the game, IU South Bend hit 16 of their 17 attempts from the charity stripe - all coming in the second half. In addition to her scoring, Stapke led the Titans with six rebounds and four steals.
Niara Paino led the Eagles with 15 points.

MARION, Ind. -- No. 6-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University and No. 8-ranked University of Saint Francis (Ind.) are now tied atop the Mid-Central College Conference women's basketball standings after Saint Francis defeated Indiana Wesleyan 76-65 on Wednesday night in Luckey Arena.
The top-10 nationally ranked teams are both 5-1 in MCC action and the co-leaders hold a 1.5 game advantage over third place Bethel (Ind.) College who is 4-3.
Saint Francis put the game out of reach when they opened the second half on a 15-4 run that built a six-point halftime advantage into a 17-point lead at 47-30. Indiana Wesleyan never recovered in their first conference loss of the season.
Indiana Wesleyan was able to cut the deficit to single digits with less than five minutes to play. But Saint Francis, the top free throw shooting team in NAIA Division II, connected on 7-of-10 free throws down the stretch to thwart the comeback attempt. IWU would get no closer than six points (71-65) with 17 seconds remaining.
Cougar senior guard Julie Seiss was a major contributor in the USF victory. She finished with 29 points and hit 11-of-12 free throws. Junior guard Kayla Mullins added 17 as the Cougars shot 51.0-percent (26 of 51) as a team and 81.8-percent (18 of 22) from the foul line.
The Wildcats struggled to find consistent scoring on Wednesday outside of senior forward Elaine Hessel. She was the lone Wildcat in double figures with 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Hessel was 6-of-6 from the free throw line and pulled down five rebounds. Junior guard Ashley Brooks was second on the team with nine points.
In the first half, the two teams battled to three ties and four leads changes. Neither team led by more than four points until a Seiss field goal for Saint Francis put the Cougars in the lead by six at 28-22 with 3:46 left before half.
Saint Francis gained their largest lead of the opening half at eight points (32-24) before Hessel's field goal concluded the scoring in the period to send the teams into the locker rooms with a 32-26 score.
Indiana Wesleyan will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 15 with a road game at Marian (Ind.) University in Indianapolis, Indiana. The next IWU home game will be next Wednesday, January 19 versus Grace (Ind.) College. That game will have a special start time of 5 p.m
GOSHEN, Ind. (Box Score Attached) – Three-point shooting and free throws

hit 9-of-19 (47%) from long range and also converted on 14-of-21 from

#3 Cornerstone Edges Tech, 76-75
Fort Wayne, IN – In a battle for the top-spot in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, the 3rd ranked Cornerstone University Golden Eagles came back from a nine point half-time deficit to defeat the 15th ranked Warriors 76-75. With the win Cornerstone improves to 15-2 overall and a spotless 4-0 mark in the conference, while Tech falls to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the WHAC.
The Warriors got off to a fast start, quickly building a 14-7 lead just over six minutes into the game. Cornerstone battled back and cut the lead to just one, 26-25, at the 4:18 mark, but Tech used an 11-1 run to regain control of the game and went into the break up, 37-28. Tech played great defense in the opening period, forcing the visitors into tough shots and limiting them to shooting only 38 percent from the field.
The Golden Eagles started the second half hot, converting a three point play, followed by 3-pointers by Dominic Allen and Ronald Bates, making it a 41-37 Warrior lead. Cornerstone tied the game after four free throws and took their first lead of the game on another triple by Bates at the 17:02 mark.
Tech retook the lead a few minutes later, 47-46, on a deep three from Manny Hendrix (Salt Lake City, UT/Texas Pan-American) and built their advantage to six following a pair of free throws from Ashton Foster (Vallejo, CA/Delaware State), 53-47.
The two teams remained close, trading baskets before Cornerstone took a 66-61 lead with 5:32 to play. The Warriors didn’t back down and fought back to tie the game at 72 on Clyde McKinney’s (Lansing, MI/Ferris State) fifth 3-pointer of the night with 2:19 remaining.
Cornerstone answered with a score to take a two-point lead. Hendrix trimmed the deficit to one after a free throw before the Golden Eagles hit another jumper in the paint to take a 76-73 lead with less than a minute to go. Hendrix then hit a tough shot in the paint, making it a one-point game. The Warriors defense came up with a stop and had one last chance to upset the Golden Eagles but McKinney’s shot at the buzzer didn’t go.
After a 22-point performance last week, earning McKinney WHAC Player of the Week honors, he led the Warriors with another 22-point effort, knocking down five three’s on the night. Hendrix finished with 15 points and dished out a team-high five assists and Anthony Johnson (Gary, IN/Andrean) scored a season-high 14 points
Women Down Trolls, Run Win Streak To Nine
Lizzie Stapke (Highland, IN/Highland) scored 13 points andKatie Hacker (Indianapolis, IN/Franklin Central) chipped in with eleven more as IU South Bend (12-3) picked up their ninth win in a row, downing Trinity Christian 53-40. The Titans forced 24 turnovers and, despite shooting just 29% from the floor, led the entire way.
At the outset, the TItans found their groove, jumping out to a quick 8-0 lead, forcing a TCC timeout. The stoppage benefitted the Trolls, as they were able to stem the tide and slowly chip their way back closer. After the teams traded baskets for most of the first half, IU South Bend was able to open up a nine-point, 28-19, edge at the break.
Out of the break, it was more of the same, as the two teams traded mini-runs. The Titans would open their lead to as many as 13 over the first part of the second stanza but the Trolls kept clawing back - closing to within four.
The Titans, however, closed the game well - getting free throws and baskets from Stapke, Betsy Grogan (Battle Ground, IN/West Lafayette Harrison) and Kimmie Hummer (South Bend, IN/Mishawaka Marian [Goshen]) to seal the 53-40 win.
Hacker and Brooke Daugherty (Terre Haute, IN/South [Danville]) led the Titans with eight rebounds each, while Stapke and Kayla George (Peru, IN/Maconaquah) each registered four steals.
The Titans return to action - and open CCAC play - on Saturday, January 15 when they host Robert Morris for a noon tip. The game is part of Homecoming/Alumni Day with events scheduled throughout the day

TIU Snaps Purdue Calumet’s Four Game Winning Streak
HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue University Calumet men’s basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end, as Trinity International University took home an 87-84 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Peregrines (7-9) lost for just third time in their last night games, dropping to 2-3 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Missed opportunities proved to be the story line for PUC, as the Black and Gold knocked down just 14-of-25 from the charity stripe in the three-point loss. Purdue Calumet’s defense, which had held opposing teams to 38.8 percent shooting in the past five games, fell victim to an efficient TIU attack, as the Trojans knocked down 10-of-23 from beyond the arc on their way to an impressive 56.7 field goal percentage.
The Black and Gold looked in control midway through the first half, as Brandon Bradford capped off a 9-3 run that handed PUC a 10-point lead, 32-22, with 5:42 left in the period. However, Trinity International closed the half on a 20-5 run to head into the break with a 42-37 advantage.
The Trojans carried that momentum over to the final stanza, pushing their lead to 10, 53-43, on Tyrone Smith’s trifecta just three minutes into the period. Purdue Calumet chipped away at the deficit for the next 15 minutes, before taking its only lead of the second half, 82-81, on Kameron Bright’s free throw.
However, that lead would be short lived, as Smith drained another trey to hand TIU a two-point advantage. The Peregrines kept it a one-possession game for the rest of the way out, but were unable to get off the potential game-tying shot before the buzzer.
Purdue Calumet finished with a 48.5 field goal percentage, but managed just 28.6 percent shooting from downtown. PUC dominated the glass once again, posting a 44-24 advantage on the boards which included 17 offensive rebounds.
Andrew Anderson led all players with 26 points to go along with his eight rebounds and four assists. Kameron Bright finished with 13 points and 8 boards off the bench, while Kameran Madison and Neal Hudson each added 12 points.
Boilermaker Track & Field Opens Strong At Purdue Invitational
Rookie Dani Bunch put up two huge marks on Saturday.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men’s and women’s track and field teams had a strong opening to the 2011 indoor campaign on Saturday, turning in several outstanding marks as they hosted the Purdue Invitational at Lambert Fieldhouse. The Boilermakers won a combined 24 events on the day, including a pair by standout freshman Dani Bunch, who stormed her way into the Purdue women’s record books.
Bunch posted all-time top-five Boilermaker marks in the shot put and weight throw on Saturday, tossing the No. 5 all-time mark in the shot put at 15.35 meters (50-04.50) and the No. 5 toss in school history in the weight throw at 19.20 meters (63-00.00).
Other solid outings on the women’s side came from senior Emily Breslin, junior Leah Eber and freshman Nikki Nunn. Breslin had a solid start to her indoor campaign, clearing 1.75 meters (5-08.75) to top the women’s high jump, while Eber leaped 11.85 meters (38-10.50) to win the triple jump in her first collegiate try in the event. Nunn kicked off her collegiate career with a win in the long jump, bouncing 5.71 meters (18-09.00) to top the field.
On the men’s side senior captain Jacob Palmer opened his final indoor campaign in strong fashion, posting a career-best time in the 600-meter run at 1:20.39. Classmate Chris Kirtz turned in a personal record in the 60-meter dash as well, topping the event in 6.96 seconds. Other impressive wins came from senior Bill Hardcastle and rookie Seth Virgil as Hardcastle topped the weight throw and fell just shy of his career best at 17.62 meters (57-09.75), while Virgil won the long jump in his first collegiate meet with a mark of 7.12 meters (23-04.50).
Lady Lancers Fall Short at Taylor
UPLAND, Ind. – A strong start wasn’t enough as the Lady Lancers fell 61-77 to Taylor University on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers (11-7; 2-3 MCC) jumped out to a 10-4 lead and controlled most of the first half. However, shooting went cold as Grace went nearly five minutes without a field goal.
Grace led by as many as six, but Taylor (12-8; 3-3 MCC) tallied 12 offensive rebounds in the half to take a 36-28 lead at the break.
Grace cut the deficit to three with 15:31 remaining, but Taylor began to pull away behind excellent shooting from the free throw line going 19-20 in the half and 26-27 in the game.
The Lady Lancers had three players in double figures. Kiera Gray led the team with 16 points and three assists while Hayley Cashier added 14 points and six rebounds. Danielle Boykin also chipped in 10 points for Grace.

Grace Defense Hounds Trojans
WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Lancer defense held the Trojans to a season low 42 points on 21 percent shooting from the field on Saturday.
Grace (12-6; 3-2 MCC) turned up the defensive intensity sparking an 11-0 run with 12 minutes remaining in the first half to give the Lancers a 21-14 lead over the Trojans (11-8; 1-5 MCC). The run was sparked by Grace’s ability to create turnovers.
The Lancers were led by Bruce Grimm Jr. who recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. He also added five steals. “Grimm does a good job of creating havoc on the defensive end, which leads to easy buckets on the other end,” said assistant coach John Yeh.
“We made an effort to get the ball into Duke Johnson and he really opened it up for the rest of the team,” continued Yeh. Johnson scored 11 of his 19 points in the first half including seven of the first eight points.
“We played a complete game today,” said head coach Jim Kessler. “Our defense played well the entire night and forced Taylor into some bad decisions, which allowed our offense to get back on track.”
Grace took control of the game for good mid-way through the second half by going on a 15-2 run. Grimm ignited the run with seven points and two assists to give the Lancer’s a commanding 47-28 lead.
Grace outrebounded the Trojans 38-24 dominated the paint 38-8 en route to a 70-42 victory. The win is the sixth straight win over the Trojans and the ninth straight home win this season.

Second Half Surge Lifts Peregrines Past TIU
HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue University Calumet women’s basketball team blitzed Trinity International University in the second half, 55-24, on its way to an 88-61 blowout on Saturday afternoon. The Peregrines improve to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference with the win.
After heading into halftime with a four-point deficit, 37-33, Purdue Calumet came to life in the second half. The Black and Gold held the Trojans to just 23.1 percent shooting in the final stanza, while connecting on a sizzling 61.3 percent of their shots from the field including 6-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc.
The Peregrines opened the closing period on a 5-0 run to grab their first lead since the 16:29 mark in the first half, 38-37. TIU responded with back-to-back buckets from Reanna Perera to regain the lead, but PUC was able to answer at the charity stripe. Purdue Calumet scored five-straight points from the line, before Tierra Turner’s jumper in the lane pushed the Black and Gold’s lead to six, 51-45, with 15:13 remaining.
PUC could not pull away from Trinity International, however, as the two teams traded baskets over the next seven minutes until the Peregrine defense stepped up. Purdue Calumet held the Trojans to just three points in the final 8:31, while Alex Starr led the charge with 11 of the team’s 25 points in that span.
Purdue Calumet finished with a 48.5 field goal percentage, while holding TIU to 32.1 percent on 1-of-22 shooting from downtown. The Peregrines posted an eight rebound edge on the boards, behind a 33-16 effort in the second half.

No. 18 Boilermakers Suffer 21-19 Loss To No. 17 Central Michigan
Junior Matt Fields had a huge pin at 133 pounds.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The 18th-ranked Purdue wrestling team dropped its second dual of the day at the 23rd-Annual NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, suffering a 21-19 loss at the hands of 17th-ranked Central Michigan University (CMU) at the UNI Dome on Saturday. A pair of Boilermakers scored pins in the loss, while two others earned wins to keep the score close.
The Boilermakers lost the opener for the second straight match as freshman Camden Eppert lost a 2-0 decision to CMU’s Christian Cullinan, but Purdue junior Matt Fields shocked the wrestling world with a surprising pin of ninth-ranked Scotti Sentes. Sentes looked like he was on his way to bonus points, taking Fields down and turning him twice for an 8-0 lead after three minutes. Fields made the unorthodox choice to take top position in the second frame and took full advantage, catching Sentes in a cradle and sticking him at the 3:47 mark to give Purdue a 6-3 team score lead.
Fellow junior Jake Fleckenstein pushed the advantage to 9-3, earning his first win of the year at 141 pounds as he downed Scott Mattingly, 3-2. Fleckenstein went to the third period trailing 1-0, but after selecting the bottom position he escaped and hit a nice high-crotch takedown to build the decisive advantage.
The Boilermakers took a serious hit over the next four matches as the Chippewas went on a 15-0 run to take an 18-9 advantage. It started as 149-pound Purdue senior Sam Patacsil had to default against Donnie Corby after injuring his right arm, and followed as Eric Cubberly upset fellow Boilermaker senior Colton Salazar, 9-5. At 165 pounds, CMU’s Ryan Cubberly snared a takedown with just 13 seconds left in the match to edge Purdue freshman Patrick Kissel, and the 174-pound contest went all the way to a tie-breaker before fifth-ranked Chippewa Ben Bennett edged out 10th-ranked Purdue senior Luke Manuel, 4-1.
No. 12 junior A.J. Kissel got the Boilermakers off the slide at 184 pounds as he needed just 1:44 to stick CMU’s Chad Friend and knife the score to 18-15. Ninth-ranked senior Logan Brown followed Kissel’s lead and overwhelmed Craig Kelliher in a 9-1 major decision to regain the Boilermakers’ lead, 19-18. Kelliher wrestled simply not to get pinned as after giving up a takedown in the first 15 seconds he flattened out and took four stalling calls, just one away from disqualification.
The Purdue lead was shortlived as third-ranked heavyweight Jarod Trice posted an 8-2 decision over Boilermaker junior Roger Vukobratovich to seal the CMU victory. Purdue falls to 3-3-1 with the loss and resumes competition on Friday with a Big Ten Dual at Michigan.

Purdue Westling
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 18th-ranked Purdue wrestling team will take its dual reputation to the national stage this weekend, set to compete in the 23rd-Annual NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, presented by Hibiclens and The U.S. Marines and hosted by the University of Northern Iowa. Saturday will mark the Boilermakers’ third appearance at the event in school history and their first since 1993, as they open the weekend with second-ranked Oklahoma State University at 11 a.m. (CT).
“We’re thrilled to have this opportunity to compete against some of the nation’s best,” said Purdue head coach Scott Hinkel. “We have a great team, and a great dual meet team, and we plan to take full advantage of our appearance on this stage.”
The Boilermakers head to Cedar Falls, Iowa with a 3-1-1 dual mark this season, including an 18-15 victory over No. 13 Missouri on Dec. 12. The strength of the Purdue lineup continues to lie in its four ranked grapplers: Colton Salazar, Luke Manuel, A.J. Kissel and Logan Brown. Salazar sits 12th in the country at 9-2 at 157 pounds, Manuel is 7-3 and 10th in the nation at 174 pounds, 12th-ranked A.J. Kissel is 12-3 at 184 pounds and Brown sits 11-1 and ninth in the nation at 197 pounds. Brown enters the weekend with a pair of significant career marks in reach as he’s just two wins shy of 100 and five takedowns shy of 300. He looks to become just the 16th wrestler in Purdue history to hit the 100-win plateau and just the sixth Boilermaker to score 300 career takedowns.
Senior Akif Eren and junior Jake Fleckenstein will make season premieres at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively, this weekend, switching spots in the Boilermaker lineup. Eren returns to 133 pounds, where he posted a career-best 24 wins and qualified for the NCAA Championships last season, while Fleckenstein bumps back up to 141 pounds, where he was 15-6 last year with 91 takedowns before a season-ending injury.
“I think both guys are excited about the move,” said Hinkel. “Akif has been very strong at 141, and will keep that strength against some smaller guys at 133, while Jake has a pair of outstanding wins this season at 133, but we feel he’s at his most competitive weight at 141.” Eren is 7-7 on the year at 141, while Fleckenstein is 4-5 at 133 pounds with wins over fifth-ranked Lou Ruggirello of Hofstra and Missouri’s Nathan McCormick.
Purdue has a stiff test in its first-round matchup with the second-ranked Cowboys on Saturday, as Oklahoma State fields nationally-ranked wrestlers in nine of the 10 weight classes, including six top-10 athletes and the country’s No. 1 ranked grappler at 133 pounds. Top-ranked sophomore Jordan Oliver is 8-0 on the early season and topped former No. 1 ranked Andrew Hochstrasser of Boise State at the NWCA All-Star Dual in November. Other standouts include fifth-ranked 125-pound freshman Jon Morrison, No. 5 149-pound junior Jamal Parks, ninth-ranked 165-pound freshman Dallas Bailey, ninth-ranked 174-pound junior Mike Benefiel and No. 3 197-pound senior Clayton Foster. Highly anticipated clashes in Saturday’s opener include Salazar and No. 14 Albert White at 157 pounds, Manuel and Benefiel at 174, Kissel and No. 11 freshman Chris Perry at 184 and Brown and Foster at 197.
Depending on wins and losses in the opening round, Purdue will follow its opener with either No. 12 Virginia Tech or No. 17 Central Michigan in the second round at 3 p.m. (CT). The 12th-ranked Hokies are 6-2 this season, featuring ranked individuals at seven weights, while the No. 17 Chippewas are just 1-3 and boast a trio of standouts in the national rankings. Virginia Tech’s strength sits in the lower half of the lineup, highlighted by No. 5 Chris Diaz at 141 pounds and fifth-ranked Jesse Dong at 157 pounds, while each of Central Michigan’s individual standouts are in the top-10 of their respective weight classes.
The remainder of the field includes more of the nation’s best in top-ranked Cornell, No. 4 Wisconsin, fifth-ranked Minnesota and sixth-ranked Boise State. Rounding out the list of teams is 11th-ranked Oregon State, No. 13 Missouri, No. 14 Iowa State, 22nd-ranked American, No. 24 Ohio State, Northern Illinois, South Dakota State and the hosts, Northern Iowa.

WMU pulled within seven just minutes later after a couple post-up moves by Cleary and a stick-back by DeAirra Goss.
CMU responded with an 8-2 run to push the lead back to 60-47 with 5:10 to play. Anderson scored five of the Broncos' next seven points to cut the deficit to 60-54 with 2:54 to play. However, that was as close as WMU would get the rest of the way. Anderson filled the stat sheet with nine points, six rebounds and three assists on the night for WMU
Women Top Holy Cross For 8th Straight Win
Katie Hacker (Indianapolis, IN/Franklin Central) tallied her second double-double of the season with 22 points and 12 rebounds as IU South Bend (11-3) extended their winning streak to eight games with a 71-66 win over Holy Cross. Betsy Grogan (Battle Ground, IN/West Lafayette Harrison) added a dozen points for the Titans - including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw stripe, while Brooke Daugherty (Terre Haute, IN/South) added ten more.
The Titans scored the first basket of the game, as Daugherty got free under the rim just ten seconds into the game. The Saints, however, had an immediate answer, ripping off a 10-1 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to take a 10-3 lead.
Lizzie Stapke (Highland, IN/Highland) hit a triple to end the spurt, and the Titans would spend the six minutes cutting into the Holy Cross advantage, eventually tying the game at 18 on the first of three made free throws by Hacker midway through the opening period. For the final ten minutes of the half, the teams traded baskets and leads, with neither able to open an advantage larger than four. Grogan closed the scoring for IU South Bend with a pair of free throws, giving the Titans a 36-35 halftime lead.
Out of the break, the Saints used the first four minutes to open up a 45-40 lead, prompting a Titan timeout. A quick 9-3 burst for IU South Bend gave them the lead back at 49-48, and after the teams traded scored several more times, the Saints found themselves with a one point lead at 58-57.
From there, the Titans found their stroke, embarking on another 9-3 run to give themselves a 67-60 lead with just under four minutes to play. The Saints would connect on a pair of baskets over the final two minutes of the game, but the Titans hit their free throws down the stretch to ice the win away.
Emily Strilich (Valparaiso, IN/Boone Grove) added a career-high eight rebounds in just 14 minutes, helping the Titans to out-rebound Holy Cross 38-19. Grogan's 8-for-8 from the free throw line, combined with Hacker's 7-for-9, Daugherty's 6-for-8 and 2-for-2 each from Stapke, Kimmie Hummer (South Bend, IN/Mishawaka Marian [Goshen]) andKayla George (Peru, IN/Maconaquah) gave the team a 27-for-31 mark from the line, good for 87%.
The Saints were led by Megan Eve's 17 points, as she connected on her first five attempts from behind the three point line

Purdue's Johnson Named A Sporting News Midseason All-American
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue senior forward/center JaJuan Johnson was recognized for his early-season efforts on Wednesday when Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News counted him among his five midseason All-Americans.
The second AP Preseason All-American in Purdue history, Johnson is averaging 19.9 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game on the season. In two Big Ten games, the Indianapolis native is producing at a rate of 20.5 points and 8.5 boards per outing.
Johnson is ranked 28th in Division I in scoring and 35th in blocks per game. He also ranks fourth in the Big Ten in both points and rebounds per game, while ranking second in blocks and sixth in minutes played.
“He doesn’t have the bulk of many inside players, but that doesn’t mean teams can push him around,” DeCourcy wrote. “Johnson delivers as a scorer, rebounder and shot-blocker and eagerly embraced a heavier load once classmate Robbie Hummel was lost for the year with a knee injury.”
Johnson has scored in double figures in 23-consecutive contests, leading the Boilermakers in points six times on the year. He has also paced the Boilers in rebounds seven times and in blocks in each of the team’s 14 games. He has five double-doubles on the season, moving into 13th place on the program charts with 19 for his career.
Perhaps the signature moment of Johnson’s season through 14 games is his 29-point barrage at Virginia Tech to propel the Boilers to a 58-55 overtime victory and the Big Ten to its second-straight ACC/Big Ten Challenge win. He scored Purdue’s first 11 points of the game, and nailed a jump hook with eight seconds left to send the game into extra time.
Johnson also had a career-high 31 points in front of friends and family at Conseco Fieldhouse to lead Purdue to a win over Indiana State in the Boilermaker BlockBuster. He tallied 25 of the Boilers’ 32 first-half points, including the team’s first 17 points.
Heading into Wednesday evening’s Big Ten road test at Penn State, Johnson ranks ninth in Purdue history in rebounds (675) and 19th in points (1,500), making him one of just 11 Boilermakers to rank in the top 20 of both lists.
Wednesday night’s contest is slated for a 6:31 tip at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pa. Big Ten Network will televise the action, while Larry Clisby and Rob Blackman will call the game over the radio waves on the Purdue Sports Network.

Henry, Grimm’s Effort Not Enough against Huntington
HUNTINGTON, Ind. – David Henry and Bruce Grimm combined for 41 points and eight assists, but Grace still fell short to No. 24 Huntington 76-67 on Tuesday.
The Lancers (10-6; 1-2 MCC) nailed half of their three-point attempts, but allowed the Foresters (13-3; 2-1 MCC) to shoot 50.0 percent from the field for the game. Despite being down by two at halftime, No. 17 Grace could only manage 29 points in the second half to allow Huntington to cruise to the victory.
Grace allowed Huntington to grab 15 offensive rebounds. The Foresters held a plus-16 advantage on the boards, and no Lancer had more than five rebounds.
Huntington's defense held Grace's top scorer this season Duke Johnson to three points. Johnson managed one field goal in 25 minutes before fouling out with 3:40 to play.
Grimm was the high scorer for Grace with 24 points. He also tallied five assists and one turnover. Henry scored 17 points with four 3-pointers -- all in the first half. He also recorded three assists.
Grace is in the midst of its toughest stretch of the season, having lost four straight. In Grace's past four games, they have surrendered at least 74 points. For the season, the Lancers are 2-5 when their opponents score at least 74 and 7-2 when Grace holds them to under 74.

Karp Shines; Saint Xavier Falls to No. 10 Northwood, 91-64
West Palm Beach, Fla. - Freshman guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) finished with team-bests of 25 points and seven rebounds, but it was not nearly enough as the Saint Xavier University men’s basketball team struggled as a unit falling 91-64 to No. 10 ranked Northwood University (Fla.) Tuesday night in West Palm Beach, Fla. The Cougars had problems securing rebounds in the game posting just 23 boards compared to 46 by the Seahawks. Second-half shooting was also an issue Tuesday as SXU hit just 32 percent of its shots (9-for-28) after the halftime break. It is the third straight loss for the Cougars, who fall to 12-5 overall on the season.
Senior guard Stan Mayfield (Snellville, Ga./McKendree University/Snellville) was the only other Saint Xavier player to score in double figures with 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the floor. Junior guard Jonathan Dunn led all scorers with 32 points for Northwood University, while sophomore forward Patrick Horstmann posted a double-double performance of 12 points and 11 rebounds. The game was tight for the opening 13 minutes of regulation and the score tied with seven minutes left in the opening half. However, the Seahawks could care of the game from there and pulled away to take a 13-point advantage into halftime, 50-37. The second half was all Northwood University as SXU struggled to find its offense scoring just 27 points after the break.
