Purdue Wrestling Update

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The 24th-ranked Purdue wrestling team suffered a hard-fought 22-17 loss to 13th-ranked archrival Indiana University (IU) on Sunday at Lawrence North High School. The Boilermakers won half of the 10 bouts on the afternoon, led by sixth-ranked junior Luke Manuel’s technical fall at 174 pounds. The Boilermakers fall to 10-10 on the season and 1-6 in conference bouts with the loss, despite their best showing of the recent Big Ten schedule. Joining Manuel in the win column were seniors Nick Corpe and Nick Bertucci and juniors Akif Eren and Colton Salazar, who all scored decision victories on the day. Manuel improves to 35-2 on the season, leading NCAA Division I in victories, and continues to assault the Boilermaker record books with his 90th career victory. He also became the third Boilermaker to crack the 200-career takedown mark this season, joining Corpe and junior teammate Logan Brown. Manuel started the match in dominant fashion at 174 pounds, rolling out a 22-7 technical fall over Hoosier junior Nick Avery. The match was stagnant for the first minute, but Manuel opened the scoring with a takedown and quick two-point nearfall for a 4-0 lead. The rest of the match was a takedown clinic for Manuel as he finished the bout with nine two-pointers, including his final score in the closing seconds to earn the extra bonus point with the technical fall. The Boilermakers won the first of the swing bouts at 184 pounds as Corpe edged out IU junior Eric Cameron by decision, 3-2. The match offered very little action through the first six minutes as the two traded escapes, but added nothing else for a 1-1 tie. Things got started in the final minute as the pair mounted offense, but it was Corpe who added the contest’s lone takedown, scoring in the final 30 seconds for the win and an 8-0 Purdue advantage. The Hoosiers got things rolling at 197, opening a three-match win streak with a 4-1 decision for 15th-ranked sophomore Matt Powless over 13th-ranked Brown. Powless put up three points in the second period to gain the advantage and held off Brown in the third for the upset win. Second-ranked Indiana senior Nate Everhart added six team points at heavyweight, needing just 2:27 to stick Purdue freshman Adam Walls, and top-ranked IU senior Angel Escobedo nearly pinned Boilermaker rookie Cashé Quiroga at 125, but Quiroga held off the fall in the closing seconds and forced Escobedo to settle for the major decision, 19-5. After the intermission, Purdue got back into things as Eren topped Indiana sophomore Matt Ortega by decision, 6-2. Eren was on the attack early, nearly catching Ortega in a cradle and taking him to his back in the first 20 seconds, but the Hoosier scrambled away for no score. The second time Ortega was not so lucky as Eren took him straight to his blades for a five-point play, and that was all the scoring Eren would need. The Hoosiers grabbed momentum right back at 141 pounds as freshman Danny Monaco rolled to a 7-1 decision over Purdue sophomore Bill Putman. Monaco earned a takedown in the first period and a reversal to start the second en route to a 4-0 lead, and a series of stalling calls against Putman stretched the lead to 6-0. Monaco cut Putman in the waning seconds to look for the major, but couldn’t come up with the points and settled for three team tallies. Bertucci added another win for the Old Gold and Black at 149 pounds, using an escape and late takedown for a 3-0 win over Indiana senior Matt Coughlin. Coughlin provided little offense, but his shot ended up being his downfall as Bertucci funked through a single-leg attempt by the Hoosier, rolling him through and coming out the back for two. Salazar made it two straight for the Boilermakers and gave them a 17-16 team score lead, edging out sixth-ranked Kurt Kinser in sudden victory, 3-1. After little action through the first seven minutes, Salazar sparked the crowd just into the extra minute, ducking Kinser into a takedown and the win. Indiana’s 12th-ranked junior Paul Young put the match away for the Hoosiers, sticking Purdue senior Jason Martin in 4:34 to seal the team victory. Indiana improves to 15-3 (4-3 Big Ten) with the win and picks up the second straight win in the series and a Crimson and Gold Cup point for the Hoosiers. The Boilermakers close out their dual schedule on Thursday at No. 21 Illinois at 8 p.m. (EST). #24 Purdue 17 - #13 Indiana 22174: #6 Luke Manuel (PU) def. Dudzik and Terence Weigand added an 8-7 (4) victory over Stump and Deihle to round out the lineup.

IUPUI Softball update

ELMHURST, Ill. - The IUPUI Softball team has been picked to finish ninth in The Summit League standings according to the preseason coaches poll. Western Illinois picked up five of the nine possible first-place votes to earn the top billing while reigning tournament champion North Dakota State garnered the four remaining first-place votes and was picked second. Southern Utah easily outdistanced the field for third while Oakland, UMKC and South Dakota State represented the middle third of the pack.

Centenary was picked seventh, followed by IPFW and IUPUI, respectively.

The Jaguars return a powerful portion of its batting order from a year ago, keyed by senior outfielder Mia Ettl (Mishawaka, Ind./Marian) and junior infielder Amy Raker (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville). Ettl earned First Team All-Summit honors a year ago after belting a school record 12 homers to go along with a .336 batting average and 34 runs batted in. She also drilled 11 doubles and had a .658 slugging percentage in 146 at-bats.

Raker batted .316 with five homers and 25 RBI with 10 doubles while starting all 53 games a year ago. Senior Laura Wilcox (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) also provided some pop in the middle of the order with six homers in just 96 at-bats in her first season with the Jags.

Raker and sophomore Samantha Bumbaugh (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) will be depended on to anchor the pitching staff this season as the duo combined to toss over 76 percent of the team’s innings last year. Raker led the Jags in complete games (11), strikeouts (64) and appearances (37).

This year’s crop of newcomers is led by pitcher/infielder Jocelyn Oppenhuis (Munster, Ind./Illiana Christian), speedy outfielder Breanna Shannon (Mishawaka, Ind./Marian), catcher Sydney Miller (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) and infielder Alicia Garrison (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central).

Purdue Wrestling Update

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 24th-ranked Purdue Wrestling team suffered a 27-11 loss to visiting No. 13 University of Wisconsin on Friday night, falling to 10-8 overall and 1-4 in Big Ten Dual competition. The Boilermakers managed to win just three of the 10 matches on the evening, highlighted by junior Colton Salazar’s technical fall victory at 157 pounds.

Joining Salazar in the win column was sixth-ranked 174 pound classmate Luke Manuel and No. 17 125 pound freshman Cashé Quiroga, who each posted decision victories on the evening. Manuel improved to 33-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference matches, moving within one win of the Boilermakers’ top-20 list for single-season victories, and climbed to a tie for 18th all-time at Purdue with his 88th career win. Salazar’s win was his 24th of the season, rebounding from back-to-back Big Ten losses last weekend and improving to 3-2 in conference duals, while Quiroga evened his conference mark at 2-2 with his 21st victory of the year.

Wisconsin grabbed control of the match early as they opened at 184 pounds and the Badgers reeled off three straight wins and a 9-0 advantage. No. 16 sophomore Travis Rutt took down Purdue senior Nick Corpe by decision, 6-2, in the opener, and eighth-ranked Wisconsin junior Trevor Brandvold won the feature bout of the evening, outscoring No. 11 Boilermaker junior Logan Brown at 197 pounds, 8-3. The Badgers junior heavyweight Eric Bugenhagen completed the run with a 4-1 decision over Purdue rookie Adam Walls in a gutsy effort by the Boilermaker freshman.

Quiroga got the Boilermakers off the slide at the return to the top of the lineup, fighting off an upset bid by Wisconsin senior Drew Hammen and earning a 6-4 overtime win. Quiroga raced out to a 4-1 lead with a pair of first-period takedowns, but stalled out in the second as Hammen had a solid ride which lasted the full two-minute period. Hammen escaped to start the third, and evened the count at 4-4 with a takedown of his own in the final 20 seconds. However, Quiroga wasted little time in the extra period, slipping behind Hammen on the mat for the two-point win, and nearly took the Badger to his back for a sudden-victory fall if it weren’t for the match being stopped short by the official.

The Badgers went back on the offense at 133 pounds as seventh-ranked freshman Tyler Graff put on a dominating performance in his pin victory over Purdue sophomore Matt Fields, and fellow Wisconsin rookie Cole Schmitt carried the run over at 141 with a 15-0 technical fall over Boilermaker rookie Tommy Churchard. Purdue senior Nick Bertucci put on a solid performance against fifth-ranked Wisconsin senior Kyle Ruschell at 149 pounds, but the Badgers prevailed again, taking a 7-3 decision and improving their lead to 23-3.

Salazar took a big bite out of the lead with his 17-2 technical fall win over Wisconsin freshman Jesse Hintz at 157, needing just 5:21 to secure the five team points. It was all offense, all the time for the Boilermaker junior, piling up five takedowns and a pair of three-point nearfalls in the match.

Top-ranked 165-pound sophomore Andrew Howe earned his 24th consecutive victory for the Badgers in the next bout, fending off a tough effort from Purdue senior Jason Martin for a 12-3 win. Martin kept it close through most of the first two periods, but Howe turned it on late with four takedowns in the last three minutes for the major decision.

Manuel’s return to the mat wasn’t an exciting one, but another solid win for the Boilermakers as he edged out freshman Brendan Ard, 3-0. After a scoreless first period, Manuel put on a tough ride in the second, continuously returning Ard to the mat for a full two minutes of riding time. He finished it off in the third period, stuffing a errant shot by Ard and working behind for the two-point takedown.

The Boilermakers return to action on Sunday, heading up to East Lansing, Mich. for a battle with Michigan State University. The Spartans entered the weekend at 7-4-1 and 1-

Following a Cougar bucket to open the second half, the Wildcats scored on their next four possessions to lead 54-38. Martin scored six of his 14 points during the stretch.
Indiana Wesleyan (22-4) led 59-44 with 13:53 left on the clock when Spring Arbor scored six unanswered points to find themselves down just nine points (59-50) with 10:39 remaining. SAU cut the IWU advantage to seven points on two different occasions, with the final one coming at 63-56 following a pair of free throws by Baisden.
But on the next Wildcat possession, senior guard Ryan Hetrick drilled a 3-pointer with 5:05 in the game to boost the lead back to double digits, and the Cougars would not get any closer.
IWU senior center Zach Coverstone iced the game away with five points on back-to-back possessions for Indiana Wesleyan. He dropped in a pair of free throws at 3:14 and hit an old fashioned 3-point play at 2:35 as Indiana Wesleyan increased the advantage to 73-58.
The Wildcats finished the afternoon shooting 55.8-percent (29 of 52) from the floor and 50.0-percent (8 of 16) from deep. IWU out-rebounded SAU 36-to-25 and had 19 assists with only 10 turnovers.
Coverstone led Indiana Wesleyan with 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots. Junior forward Will Hubertz added 13 points and eight boards. Senior guard Spencer Harris had nine points and four assists while Troyer contributed eight points and four assists.
Baisden led all scorers with 21 points for the Cougars. He shot 6-of-16 from the field but was 9-of-9 from the free throw line.
Spring Arbor completed the afternoon at 43.6-percent (24 of 55) shooting and 25.0-percent (3 of 12) from beyond the arc.
Indiana Wesleyan remains atop the Mid-Central College Conference with a 10-2 record and is half a game up on No. 9-ranked Bethel (Ind.) College (10-3) and a full game up on No. 8-ranked University of Saint Francis (9-3). Spring Arbor falls off the pace of the leaders with a mark of 8-5.
The Wildcats will hit the road on Tuesday, February 9 in another critical MCC contest as Indiana Wesleyan will play at Saint Francis. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

#24 Purdue Wrestling Fall at Michigan State 20-13

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 24th-ranked Purdue wrestling team lost a 20-13 contest at Big Ten rival Michigan State University on Sunday, dropping to 10-9 overall and 1-5 in conference duals on the season. The Boilermakers saw victories from No. 17 freshman Cashé Quiroga, junior Colton Salazar, sixth-ranked junior Luke Manuel and No. 11 junior Logan Brown in the bout, with Quiroga posting his team-best eighth major decision of the season.Quiroga posted his second straight victory at 125 pounds to open the match, rolling up six takedowns en route to a 14-4 major decision victory. However, the Spartans came storming back over the next three matches led by fourth-ranked defending national champion Franklin Gomez at 133 pounds. Gomez tallied a 16-1 technical fall over Purdue sophomore Matt Fields, and Michigan State freshman Dan Osterman followed with an 8-5 upset win over 20th-ranked Purdue junior Juan Archuleta at 141 pounds. No. 12 Spartan sophomore David Cheza completed the run at 149 pounds, posting an 8-2 decision over Boilermaker senior Nick Bertucci, giving Michigan State an 11-4 advantage in the team score. Salazar halted the run at 157 pounds, scoring an early takedown and building up over two minutes of riding time en route to a 4-3 win over Spartan junior Anthony Jones. The win improved Salazar to 25-10 on the season and 4-2 in conference duals, and cut Michigan State’s lead to 11-7 at the intermission. The Spartans pushed their lead back to seven after the break as senior Kyle Bounds used a pair of first period takedowns to outlast Boilermaker senior Jason Martin at 165 pounds. The advantage was returned to four points at 174 pounds in a raucous match between sixth-ranked Purdue junior Luke Manuel and Spartan sophomore Ian Hinton. The bout got very physical early as Hinton tacked on just the sixth and seventh takedowns of the season surrendered by Manuel en route to a 4-2 lead, but then gave away another point as he was penalized for spitting on the mat, making it 4-3 at the end of the first. Manuel escaped quickly to tie the match in the second period, and Hinton was called for stalling in the waning seconds of the frame after consistently backing up for the first five minutes. The Spartans chose a neutral start to the third, holding 1:19 in riding time, but the continued retreat resulted in a second stalling call and another penalty point, making it 5-4 in Manuel’s fare. Manuel finished the bout in regulation, stuffing a Hinton shot and working behind for two and the win, displeasing the booing Michigan State fan base. Another thriller followed at 184 pounds between Purdue senior Nick Corpe and Michigan State sophomore Curran Jacobs, which held tight through regulation and was forced into overtime before a victor was decided. Most of the scoring came in the second period as Corpe escaped and then hit a takedown for a 3-0 lead, but it was quickly erased as Jacobs escaped and scored a takedown of his own. Corpe escaped to make it 4-3 at the end of the second and Jacobs evened the mark at 4-4 at the start of the third, leaving it tied after seven minutes. A flurry of failed shots both ways kicked off the extra period, but it was Jacobs who would score the final takedown and finish the match with a 6-4 sudden victory. Purdue junior Logan Brown defended his No. 11 national ranking at 197 pounds, fending off Michigan State sophomore Tyler Dickenson, 4-2. Brown took Dickenson town in the first period and stacked up over three minutes of riding time en route to the win. He improves to 28-8 on the season and 4-2 in conference action with the victory, is now just four wins away from the Boilermakers’ all-time top-20 in career victories. The match closed with a narrow decision at 285 pounds as Spartan senior Alan O’Donnell claimed a 1-0 victory over Purdue freshman Adam Walls. The only point was an escape to start the final period, while Walls hit the only shot of the bout, snagging a single leg, but was unable to finish. The Michigan State team win snapped a two-match slide to the Boilermakers as they improved to 8-5-1 overall and 2-3 in conference. Purdue returns to action next Sunday, facing archrival Indiana University in Indianapolis at Lawrence North High School, with a Crimson and Gold Cup point on the line.#24 Purdue 13 – Michigan State 20125: Cashé Quiroga (PU) def. Ohio State Womans Soccer signs six

Buckeyes Ink Six for 2010

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After closing out a record-setting campaign with a trip to the NCAA tournament, head coach Lori Walker announced the six members of the 2010 recruiting class today that will look to build on the success the Buckeyes achieved in 2009.
The class includes three midfielders, two defenders and a goalkeeper. With the departure of All-American Ashley Bowyer and All-Big Ten performer Lauren Robertson to graduation, the 2010 recruiting class is built to help fill the void left by those two standouts.
"My staff and I are very excited to have these six players join us," head coach Lori Walker said. "It is a class we've been courting for over a year and a half. They are a group that would be defined as hard-working, technical soccer junkies."
In addition to Danica Wu from Alberta, Canada, the other five Ohio State recruits are all from different states. Maria Deliberato is the lone Ohioan, Megan Fuller hails from Iowa, Rachel Middleman from Pennsylvania, Kristen Niederhaus from New Jersey, and Adrienne Poe-Hinton comes to Columbus from Indiana.

Coach Lori Walker: "Maria is a tenacious, hard-working, competitor who will fill a needed role on the left side of our midfield. Her Regional team experience should help her adapt to the college game."
D - Megan Fuller - Bondurant, IowaIowa Rush; Bondurant Farrar High SchoolMegan has extensive Regional ODP experience after playing five years for the Region 2 ODP team … she has been captain of that team since 2008 … Megan played one season, her freshman year, at Bondurant Farrar High School and was named honorable mention all-state … attended the Adidas ESP camp in 2008 and was named to the all-star team … her club team, Iowa Rush was State Cup champions in 2008 and 2009 … also lettered in basketball and track … hobbies include hanging out with friends, watching movies, shopping and scrapbooking … she is the daughter of Amy and Chad Fuller … has a younger brother, Drake.
Coach Lori Walker: "Megan is an athletic, hard-nosed defender, who is dominant in the air and composed on the ball. She has quick closing speed, tackles hard and is difficult to beat 1v1. We see her competing for time at both center back and outside back."

Terre Haute Women's Track

TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Terre Haute North High School graduate Shaun Smith will be returning to Terre Haute next fall after signing a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Indiana State Sycamore men’s track & field team. Smith has competed at Vincennes University the past two seasons.

“He was the state champion in the 100 meters while a senior at North and has qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor and Outdoor National Championships as a freshman at Vincennes,” John McNichols, Indiana State men’s track & field coach said. “He will be a great addition to our long tradition of outstanding sprinters that have competed here.”

Also signing a National Letter of Intent to compete at Indiana State University starting next fall was Greggmar Swift, one of the best hurdlers while competing for St. Leonard’s Boys’ in Bridgetown, Barbados.

“He has a tremendous amount of international experience,” McNichols said. “And he just keeps getting better every year. He could become one of our all-time hurdlers and sprinters at Indiana State. He is a friend of Ernest Rollins who is our top triple jumper and also comes from Barbados.”

Smith has personal bests of 6.39 in the 55 meters and 6.92 in the 60 meters during indoor competition and 10.47 in the 100 meters and 21.86 in the 200 meters during outdoor competition. Valpo Womens Tennis Preview

2 2009-2010 Valparaiso Tennis
2009-2010 SEASON PREVIEW
As the 2010 spring season is set to begin for the Valparaiso University women’s tennis team, the
Crusaders have a youthful roster void of any four-year players on this year’s squad. Head coach Traci
Young begins her first full season at the helm of the Brown and Gold after taking over the Crusader
program midway through last season.
Young saw four seniors graduate from last year’s squad, and enters 2010 with three freshmen and two
sophomores among the eight players on this year’s roster. The young players will get an opportunity to
make an immediate impact in the Valpo program as the Crusaders look to improve upon their 1-22 record
from a year ago while looking to move up from ninth place in the Horizon League standings.
Christine Antrobus and Camill Burden are both seniors academically, but would have one more year
of eligibility following this season after not playing during their freshman campaigns. Antrobus has moved
among fourth, fifth, and sixth singles during the first two years of her career, posting six victories at
number six singles since her arrival at Valpo. Mainly a singles specialist, she has played just 11 doubles
contests throughout her career thus far. Antrobus missed this past fall’s slate of matches with an illness,
but looks to return to the lineup this spring.
Burden has played in a limited role in her first two years with the Brown and Gold, playing just six
matches last year in singles play. She earned her first collegiate victory against IPFW at the Mastodon
Invitational a year ago. Burden has not appeared in a doubles match yet while at Valpo, and did not play
during the fall season this year.
Jackie O’Reilly, a junior, is the only other upperclassman on the Crusader roster. Playing mainly
doubles during her first two years with the Crusaders, she was a fixture in the third spot in the lineup. She
also saw a little action in singles play, mainly at the fifth and sixth spots in the order. O’Reilly picked up a
singles win this fall at the fifth spot in the order while also notching a doubles victory at the second spot.
Sophomore Katie Bilyeu played the highest in the singles lineup of any returning Crusader last year,
playing anywhere from second to fifth in the Valpo order. She earned eight total wins between singles and
doubles, and at times last year played at the top doubles spot in the order. This past fall Bilyeu played
third singles for the Brown and Gold while also splitting time between number one and two doubles.
Stephanie York is the only other sophomore on this spring’s roster. Also making key contributions
during her rookie season, York played anywhere from number three through six in the order, mainly
competing in the fourth and fifth spots. She combined to win five doubles matches as a rookie while
posting a pair of singles triumphs this past fall in the fourth spot.
A trio of freshmen will look to make an immediate impact for the Crusaders in 2010, with two
gaining their first taste of collegiate tennis during the fall slate. Stephanie Krebs saw action in five singles
contests for the Brown and Gold this fall, playing at number six, while also playing a pair of third doubles
contests. A year ago she led Idaho Falls High School in Idaho Falls, Idaho to the district championship
and an undefeated regular season.
Brittany O’Reilly stepped right into the Crusader lineup as a freshman this fall, playing at the top of
the Valpo order in singles. The younger sister of Jackie, Brittany competed in all three doubles spots in her first fall season with the Brown
and Gold. She was a two-time state qualifier in high school at Southwest High School in Green Bay, Wis., while posting a 30-3 record as a
senior. She advanced to the state championships in singles as a senior after playing doubles and advancing to the state tournament during her
sophomore campaign. She was a two-time All-Conference selection as a prep player as well.
Abby Wright rounds out the Valpo tennis roster this spring, arriving on campus in January after
transferring from Florida Atlantic University, where she sat out the fall season. She played junior tennis
at the Bollettieri Tennis Academy for six years and advanced to the round of 16 in several international
junior events.
`The Crusaders will open a challenging schedule on February 6 when the Brown and Gold heads to
Kalamazoo, Mich. to battle the Broncos of Western Michigan. Valpo returns home a day later to face
Bradley indoors before taking some time off before the annual spring trip. Valpo will play three matches
while in Florida, beginning with a contest at Eckard on March 9. After facing North Dakota also in
Florida, Valpo will open up the Horizon League slate against Green Bay on March 13.
Upon returning north, Valpo will head to Milwaukee for another conference battle before hosting
Chicago State outdoors at the Valpo Tennis Complex. The Crusaders will play seven of their final eight
matches at home, including five conference tilts and non-conference visits from Wayne State and IPFW.
The season winds down at home on April 18 against Butler before the Horizon League Championships
take place April 23-25.
With such a youthful squad, the future looks bright for Young’s program. The Crusaders will
continue to improve throughout the spring, and will look to begin climbing up the ladder of the Horizon
League by the time the second half of the season rolls around.

Grace College Women's Basketball

Lady Lancers Slip to Maple Leafs
GOSHEN, Ind. -- Grace's women's basketball team racked up 27 turnovers and missed 13 free throws in their 69-80 loss to Goshen on Wednesday, the Maple Leafs' (9-16; 1-10 MCC) first conference win of the season.
"They aren't necessarily a pressuring team, but we still managed to turn the ball over," said head coach Scott Blum. "We played brain dead in the second half and threw the ball around."
The Lady Lancers (7-18; 3-8 MCC) took a commanding 23-11 lead in the first ten minutes of the game, but Goshen responded with a 10-0 run of their own to get back into the contest. The Maple Leafs took a 33-32 lead with 4:25 left in the first period and never looked back.
"We have to come ready to play," Blum said. "That's the thing we've battled with all year. We have a lot of work to do."
After leading 40-36 at halftime, Goshen sparked a 13-2 run at the start of the second half and led my double figures the majority of the period. The Maple Leafs led by as many as 16 and Grace never got within eight points.
Demetria Eley led Grace in points for the third game in a row, totaling 14 on the evening on 5-of-7 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds. Kayla Skaggs added nine points while Hannah Lengel, Rianne Aguilar and Morgon DiAntonio each had eight points.
Goshen's victory snapped their eight-game losing streak dating back to Dec. 19. It was Grace's sixth straight loss.Grace is back in action at Taylor University on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start

EIU Womens Basketball

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WINS 10TH CONSECUTIVE GAME FEB. 4, 2010EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Maggie Kloak scored a season-high 21 points and Ta'Kenya Nixon put together a double-double performance as Eastern Illinois women's basketball won a program-record 10th consecutive game, 74-63, at SIU Edwardsville Thursday evening. The 10-game win streak is the longest single-season run in team history. Previously, the Panthers (15-8) won their final game of the 1982 season an AIAW program and their first nine games of the 1983 campaign as an NCAA Division I program.Kloak was 6-of-9 from the field and 9-of-11 at the free throw line. Nixon finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, her team-leading third double-double of the season. Dominique Sims scored 12 and Sydney Mitchell added a career-high 11 points off the bench. The Panthers were without Ashley Thomas, who was held out of the game to rest a lingering back injury. Starting forward Chantelle Pressley played only the first three minutes of the game before leaving with an apparent leg injury.Eastern shot 57 percent from the field, highlighted by a 65 percent showing in the first half. The Panthers outscored SIUE 20-5 at the free throw line, making 15-of-21 at the charity stripe in the second half.SIU Edwardsville's aggressiveness on the defensive end forced 23 EIU turnovers, 15 coming on steals. However, the Cougars (6-18) were also whistled for 20 fouls in the game. Raven Berry and Ashley Bey, SIUE's top two players, both fouled out long before the stretch run. They were limited to a combined 11 points."[SIUE] plays hard and I'm assuming that's the way [head coach Amanda Levens] wants them to play," EIU head coach Brady Sallee said. "We took advantage of their aggressiveness and beat the tar out of them on the free throw line. That's what you've got to do; when you come on the road, you've got to take what the other team is going to give you. And if they're going to give us free throws, we'll take them."Eastern led wire-to-wire but blew the game open with a 10-2 run to open the second half. The Panthers would enjoy a double-figure advantage until the three-minute mark when SIUE finally pulled within nine. Kloak and Sims both scored four points during the 10-2 surge.Mitchell accounted for all eight of EIU's bench points in the first half. Kloak scored 12 of her 21 in the second half.Eastern led by as many as 14 in the first half after a 3-pointer by Kelsey Wyss at the 11:31 mark. But SIUE got back into the contest with an 8-2 spurt. The Cougars got as close as four down late in the first half but Nixon and Mitchell both connected on short jumpers in the final two minutes before the break. The Panthers conclude their four-game road stretch Saturday at Southeast Missouri State. Tipoff in Cape Girardeau, Mo., is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Wabash College Basketball

Wednesday night’s basketball game at Chadwick Court became a shoot out between two top scorers in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The 70-42 victory for Wabash over Earlham came from the Little Giants’ offensive balance.
View photos from the game here.
Wes Smith and Earlham’s AJ Sutherlin entered the game as two of the league’s leading scorers, and both battled to a near draw in final scoring column. Smith finished with 22 points while Sutherlin scored 23 of the Quakers’ 42 points. In fact, Sutherlin accounted for the first 19 points of the game for Earlham before Ryan Taylor’s jumper came ahead of the halftime buzzer.
Wabash was able to run away from Earlham thanks to a career-high 17 points from junior Ben Burkett. The Southmont High School graduate battled Sutherlin, one of two North Montgomery High School players on the Earlham roster, in front of a crowd of local fans that had watched the two battle throughout their high school careers.
Burkett wasn’t the only Wabash player to make a major dent in the scoring column. Aaron Brock added 13 points in the lopsided victory.
Despite Sutherlin’s 19-point first half effort, the Little Giants jumped out to a 21-11 lead midway through the first half. The lead became 21 points thanks to an 11-point run down the stretch, with seven points coming from Burkett. The Little Giants eventually took a 38-21 lead at the half.
Smith was nearly perfect in the second half, connecting on 4-of-5 shots before coming out with 10 minutes remaining and the outcome of the game no longer in doubt. Burkett added four second-half points and grabbed four additional rebounds, finishing with eight for the contest.
Smith hit 9-of-12 shots from the field, including three dunks and a three-pointer, while Sutherlin was 8-of-18 from the field overall.
The Little Giants kept Sutherlin in check throughout the final period, holding him to 1-of6 shooting and four total points in 14 minutes of action.
The Wabash bench accounted for 12 points. Freshman Jordan Surenkamp drilled two long-range shots for a career-high six points. No other Earlham (3-17, 1-10) player had more than five points in the game.
The meeting was the last between Wabash and Earlham as members of the NCAC. The Quakers will leave the conference at the end of the season to join the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Wabash (13-6, 8-3 NCAC) eclipsed its conference win total from last year, picking up its eighth NCAC victory of the season after going 7-9 in the 2008-09 campaign. The Little Giants return to action at Chadwick Court in special Sunday afternoon contest, tipping off at 2 p.m. against 21st-ranked Wooster

Indiana Wesleyan Women's Basketball

HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- A high octane performance on the offensive end led No. 6-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball to a 74-65 victory on the road at No. 18-ranked Huntington (Ind.) University on Wednesday night in a battle of ranked NAIA programs.
The Wildcats (21-4) shot 59.1-percent (26 of 44) from the floor including a 71.4-percent (15 of 21) outburst during the second half which featured 47 points for IWU. From beyond the arc, the Wildcats drilled 42.9-percent (6 of 14) of their shots.
Beyond the hot shooting performance of Indiana Wesleyan, the Wildcats garnered a balanced scoring attack from four players.
Sophomore center Krystal Stoneking finished two points shy of her career-high with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Her career-high of 19 points came a season ago versus Huntington in the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament semifinals. Stoneking just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and she blocked two shots.
IWU junior forward Elaine Hessel contributed 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting in just 21 minutes of play. Junior guard Kayla Thompson added 15 points and four assists while sophomore guard Rachel Steinbarger finished the evening with a season-high 14 points and three steals.
Huntington (16-7) held a slim 28-27 lead at the halftime intermission.
But the Wildcats rarely missed in the second half which IWU outscored the Foresters 47-37. The Wildcats missed just six shots from the field in the half and misfired on only three shots inside the 3-point arc.
Indiana Wesleyan expands their lead in the MCC to a full game over idle University of Saint Francis (Ind.) with a 10-1 mark while USF is 9-2. Huntington falls off the pace of the leaders with a 7-4 record.
The Wildcats remain on the road for their next contest when Indiana Wesleyan travels to play at Spring Arbor (Mich.) University on Saturday, February 6 with a 1 p.m. tip-off.

All Star Outfielder Mike Massaro returning to Cats in 2010

ALL-STAR OUTFIELDER MIKE MASSARO RETURNING TO ‘CATS IN 2010

GARY, Ind. — Gary SouthShore RailCats leadoff man Mike Massaro, who drilled a franchise-record 28 doubles and boasted the 10th-best average in the Northern League in 2009, will be back in the ‘Cats outfield in 2010 after today agreeing to terms on a contract for the upcoming season. The RailCats also came to terms with speedster Adam Klein, acquired via trade last month.

Massaro, 25, had the best season of his five-year professional career in 2009, batting .302 at the top of the RailCats lineup with a stellar .390 on-base percentage and career-high 53 RBI. The Colorado native was the ‘Cats best overall hitter last year, rapping 108 hits, scoring 69 runs, and adding four triples and three home runs to his record-setting and league-leading 28 doubles. Massaro also walked 54 times against just 36 strikeouts, stole 10 bases and even lifted seven sacrifice flies.

The former Triple-A outfielder for the Oakland Athletics came roaring out of the gate as a RailCat, beginning a 15-game hitting streak on May 18 and finishing the streak with a .394 average just three weeks into the season. Massaro was voted as a starter in the Northern League All-Star Game in July and followed that up with a blazing start to the second half that included 12 multi-hit games in an 18-game stretch from July 11-30. Massaro finished the year with 34 multi-hit games – including a pair of four-hit nights – and led the RailCats with 10 hits and a .294 average in the postseason.

Also one of the better defensive outfielders in the league, Massaro started 75 games in left for the ‘Cats and committed only two errors while racking up nine outfield assists. Massaro even got a chance to showcase his arm on the mound twice in 2009, working a pair of mop-up relief innings.

Originally selected in the 13th round of the 2005 Major League Entry Draft by the A’s, Massaro improved steadily throughout his four years in the Athletics system and was an All-Star for the Midwest League’s Kane County Cougars in 2007. The next year, Massaro played primarily at High-A Stockton but appeared in 24 games at Midland (AA) and hit .280 in 15 games for Triple-A Sacramento. A veteran of more than 400 minor league games, Massaro is a .286 lifetime hitter with a rock-solid .360 OBP.

Massaro starred for three years at Division II Colorado State-Pueblo where he was a three-time All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection. A native of Pueblo, Massaro made his Triple-A debut just outside his hometown against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and went 4-for-5 with a triple in his first Triple-A game.

Joining Massaro in the RailCats outfield this summer will be Klein, 26, another former Oakland Athletics farmhand. The two played together briefly at Double-A Midland in 2008, and were opponents in 2009 when Klein patrolled center field for the Joliet JackHammers. Klein was acquired by the RailCats from the Golden League’s Edmonton Capitals on January 22.

Massaro and Klein are the eighth and ninth RailCats to sign a contract for the 2010 season, joining infielders Mike Rohde and Chris Carrara, catcher Matt Lenski and pitchers Aaron Cook, Zach McClellan, Andy Paulun and J.J. Potrikus. The RailCats will have at least 28 players in camp when Spring Training opens on May 6 at U. S. Steel Yard.

The first look fans will have at the 2010 RailCats will be Saturday, February 20 at the team’s second-annual Fan Fest at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza in Merrillville. Current and former RailCats players and coaches will be on hand, and discount presale tickets are on sale now by visiting www.railcatsbaseball.com or calling 219.882.2255
