Hawks Defeat Notre Dame in Exhibition Tune-up

South Bend, IN – Yazy Arbelo hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to lead the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 13-6 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in an exhibition game at Frank Eck Stadium on Tuesday night.

Arbelo’s grand slam off of Dustin Ispas in the fourth inning turned a close game into a rout as the Hawks prepare for the regular season opener on Thursday. Raul Navarro added a two run homer in the fifth inning for South Bend.

The annual Silver vs. Gold Exhibition was played at Notre Dame for the first time in the series’ four year history. The Silver Hawks have won all four games over the Irish, which serves as a fundraiser for the Ara Parseghian Foundation.

J.R. Bradley allowed two runs on six hit in four innings on the mound. He was followed by Bradin Hagens, who was victimized by errors in giving up four unearned runs in his three innings on the hill.

Arbelo, Mike Freeman, and Chris Jarrett each had two hits to lead the offensive attack for South Bend, while five Silver Hawks combined to walk 11 times in the contest.

The Hawks open up the regular season Thursday evening at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne against the TinCaps (San Diego Padres). LHP David Holmberg is expected to start for South Bend against Fort Wayne’s RHP Keyvius Sampson. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM Eastern Time with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on www.silverhawks.com and www.sportsjuice.com.
